If you have a heart to serve others, we have a place for you. At Bakersfield Homeless Center, volunteers play a crucial role in providing compassion and assistance to families working to rebuild their lives.  We welcome any and all people who want to serve.

Whether it’s face to face or behind the scenes, volunteers make an impact in the lives of women and families experiencing homelessness.

Kitchen Assistants:

Bakersfield Homeless Center prepares and serves hundreds of meals every day to hungry clients and community members.  Kitchen Assistant Volunteers work in the kitchen to assist our cook with preparing nutritious meals.

The Kitchen opens at 5:30am daily to start preparing meals.  Meal Prep Volunteers may come at any time between 5:30am and 6:30pm and stay as long as they are able.

Volunteers must be 12 years or older to work in the kitchen. Closed toe shoes are required; non-slip soles are recommended.

Meal Server:

A friendly face and a smile while serving a meal can go a long way in letting people know that others care about them and want to help.

Meal Servers are needed to serve breakfast, lunch, or dinner any day of the week.  They also assist with cleaning up after the meal.  Volunteers must be 12 years old or older in order to work in the kitchen.  Closed toe shoes are required; non-slip soles are recommended.

Donations Sorter:

Volunteers work in a warehouse setting to sort and organize clothing, canned goods, and household items that have been donated and prepare food boxes for community members in need. They may also greet and assist people who are dropping off donations.

The Donation Center is open weekdays from 8am-5pm and Saturdays from 8am-4pm.  Volunteers may come for any length of time during that time frame and are asked to spend at least 2 hrs helping.

For college students needing intership and volunteer credit hours, we can work with you to develop an opportunity to fit your major’s requirements.  Currently, we are only accepting interns to assist in the Champ Camp Program.  Volunteers will be paired with one or more children to help with educational packets, read favorite books together, and participate in enrichment activities.

Champ Camp is held between 8:00am-2:45pm Mon-Fri.  Interns are requested to commit to at least one hour a week for the entire semester.
